Introduction
The transformation of the 170-year-old listed Inverness Castle will create a landmark visitor attraction, museum and exhibition space celebrating the past, present and future of the Scottish Highlands.
Background
Harley Haddow is part of an architect-led design team appointed to support the sensitive reuse of Inverness Castle. The proposals include new visitor experiences within the North and South Towers, alongside the refurbishment of the existing viewpoint offering panoramic views across the River Ness and Inverness city.
Challenges
As a listed historic structure, the castle presents significant constraints around fabric intervention, services integration and environmental control. The scale and complexity of the spaces, combined with aspirations for modern visitor experiences, required careful consideration of ventilation, comfort and long-term adaptability.
Solutions
The M&E strategy includes a full services refurbishment, with low-temperature heating systems designed to be future-proofed for renewable integration. Feasibility studies are exploring the reuse of an existing water well to provide heating, cooling or domestic water pre-heat. Dynamic thermal modelling and CFD analysis have informed natural ventilation strategies, particularly within the proposed glazed central link between the two towers.
