Introduction
The Royal Academy of Arts, the UK’s oldest art school, is undertaking a transformation of its RA Schools space in Piccadilly. The project aims to create a fully accessible, flexible, and high-quality working environment for both staff and students within the Grade II listed building.
Background
The existing RA Schools space required modernisation to provide contemporary facilities while retaining and enhancing the historic building fabric. The project balances the need for functional, flexible spaces with the preservation of the building’s heritage.
Challenges
Working within a Grade II listed structure requires sensitive interventions to protect historic features while integrating modern MEP and accessibility requirements. Achieving flexible use for teaching, learning, and administrative spaces without compromising the building’s character posed a significant design challenge.
Solutions
Harley Haddow provided MEP and building services design that supports the new flexible layouts while respecting the heritage elements. This includes efficient heating, ventilation, lighting, and electrical systems tailored for modern teaching and office use, seamlessly integrated into the restored historic fabric.
