Introduction

Harley Haddow worked with the Vincentians to design a new Presbytery at the Church of Sacred Heart in Mill Hill, replacing the 1960s building and providing modern accommodation for the brothers and visiting scholars.

Background

The project involved creating a residential-style ecclesiastical building with communal facilities, including a reception, kitchen, and a double-height oratory. The design aimed to provide a functional, comfortable, and inspiring space while integrating with the surrounding garden courtyard.

Challenges

Site constraints included poor ground conditions, requiring a piled foundation, and the need to balance the ecclesiastical nature of the building with residential comfort. Structural considerations included a load-bearing masonry design with precast floors and a steel and timber roof.

Solutions

Harley Haddow delivered a robust structural solution, incorporating ground beams and piled foundations to ensure stability. The oratory features a glulam roof structure, creating a visually striking sanctuary. The overall design provides generous suites for residents while maintaining a cohesive and functional building layout.
