Introduction
The E2 Laboratory project involved the fit-out of 28,199 sq. ft of existing Cat A office space on the top floor of the Edzell Building at the new Lanarkshire campus. The refurbished space now accommodates Life Sciences teaching and research laboratories, supporting the School of Science and Sport, with specialist facilities including wet and dry labs, a small aquaculture suite, and ACDP BSL2 research containment suites.

Background
Harley Haddow were commissioned to provide design services for the laboratory fit-out. The project required integration with the landlord’s existing Cat A installations while delivering a phased refurbishment approach to minimise disruption to campus operations. The project transforms office space into highly serviced, functional laboratories suitable for teaching and research purposes.
Challenges
The project required careful coordination to integrate laboratory services with the existing Cat A infrastructure, including HVAC, power, and water systems. Managing phased construction within an occupied building, while providing specialised laboratory environments such as BSL2 containment suites, posed strict compliance, safety, and scheduling challenges. The need to accommodate wet and dry labs, aquaculture facilities, and research equipment within a constrained floorplate also required precise space planning and services design.
Solutions
Harley Haddow developed a phased design and installation strategy, coordinating all MEP services with the existing Cat A infrastructure. The laboratories were designed with appropriate containment, ventilation, and environmental control systems for both teaching and research activities. Specialist services were provided for the aquaculture suite and BSL2 containment labs, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards. The phased approach allowed the building to remain partially operational while works progressed, delivering fully functional, high-specification lab spaces within the required programme.
