Introduction
Harley Haddow were appointed as Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers for the refurbishment of a multi-storey 1980s office building in central Glasgow. The project transformed the former HBoS regional headquarters at 100 West George Street into modern, highly lettable office space, with new ground-level entrances and a restaurant area at ground and basement levels, adapting the building to meet contemporary office standards.
C&S Solutions
Harley Haddow provided full civil and structural engineering services, including pre-development surveys of the existing building’s fabric, detailed structural design for extensive alterations, and new build elements. The team assessed the existing RC frame and developed structural solutions to support the modernised office layouts and the addition of ground-floor restaurant facilities.
Collaboration
The project required close coordination with the client, architects, and wider design team to integrate structural works with the extensive alterations and new build elements. Harley Haddow’s early involvement ensured informed structural decisions and smooth progression through the refurbishment programme.
Challenges
Key challenges included working within an existing 1980s RC frame building, securing a demolition (downtakings) warrant, and adapting the structure to accommodate modern office and restaurant requirements. Detailed structural assessments and careful planning were essential to deliver a safe, efficient, and high-quality refurbishment.
