Introduction

Harley Haddow supported the renovation of a Category B listed student union, delivering extensive building services upgrades to modernise the facility while respecting the character and constraints of the historic building.

Background

The project was initially intended as a targeted refurbishment focused on point-for-point lighting and small power replacements, alongside essential compliance upgrades within the existing student union building.

Challenges

As construction progressed, significant deterioration to the existing building services was uncovered, requiring the project scope to expand considerably. The team needed to carefully coordinate a major services redesign within a listed building environment while minimising disruption and maintaining the integrity of the historic structure.

Solutions

Harley Haddow delivered the full M&E technical design and site duties for a near complete strip-out and replacement of the building services infrastructure. The upgraded systems included lighting, power, data, AV, ventilation, BMS, water and gas services, helping transform the student union into a safer, more efficient and future-ready facility.
