Introduction
SWG3 is a major multi-disciplinary arts and events venue undergoing extensive remodelling to improve performance, sustainability and visitor experience, while remaining operational as a live venue.
Background
The venue comprises multiple event and exhibition spaces arranged across three floor levels within a wider urban campus. As part of the wider transformation and masterplanning works, Harley Haddow were appointed to design innovative building services solutions to support SWG3’s operational and environmental ambitions.
Challenges
The project required maximising energy efficiency within a highly variable events environment, where spaces operate both independently and simultaneously. Works also needed to be carefully phased to minimise disruption and downtime to live performance spaces during construction.
Solutions
Harley Haddow designed the award-winning BODYHEAT system, which captures heat generated by occupants, lighting and equipment and stores it within subsurface boreholes, creating a large-scale thermal battery. This enables both instantaneous and seasonal heat recovery, significantly reducing energy demand. The wider masterplan also integrates low-impact services for a new landscaped community garden, Yardworks HQ, teaching and exhibition spaces, and venue infrastructure, delivering a highly efficient, resilient and community-focused development.
