Introduction

St Columbkille’s Parish, originally founded in 1851 and later rebuilt in 1940, underwent a comprehensive transformation to modernise the building while supporting more flexible and community-focused use. The works included major building fabric renewal, internal remodelling, and enhancements to create adaptable worship, social and meeting spaces.

MEP Solutions

Harley Haddow delivered a full M&E upgrade centred on energy efficiency and ease of use. This included a new heating system featuring underfloor heating and intuitive user-friendly controls. A complete electrical renewal was carried out, incorporating new LED lighting throughout, external feature and security lighting, and updated IT and AV systems to support multi-purpose use of the building.

Collaboration

Close collaboration with the parish team and design consultants ensured that the refurbished spaces met both liturgical needs and wider community requirements. Regular engagement helped shape spaces that could transition seamlessly between worship, events and social activities.

Challenges

Key challenges included upgrading the heating and electrical systems within an existing building while maintaining operations, integrating modern services discreetly into the fabric, and ensuring the remodelling supported long-term flexibility without compromising the church’s character.
