Introduction
The Moredun Research Institute conducts world-class life science research into infectious diseases of livestock. As part of a wider site consolidation plan, the project involved refurbishing and relocating key facilities, including research laboratories, ACDP CL2 and CL3 laboratories, post-mortem suites, and bio-containment areas, while freeing up space for additional small-scale incubator labs and support facilities.

MEP Solutions
Harley Haddow provided MEP design for the highly technical laboratory environments, ensuring strict compliance with ACDP CL2 and CL3 requirements. Systems included specialised mechanical, electrical, and bio-containment solutions to support research activities, including ventilation, temperature and humidity control, and safety-critical services required for infectious disease laboratories.
Collaboration
Close collaboration with Moredun staff, laboratory specialists, and the wider design team ensured the new and relocated facilities met stringent operational, safety, and research requirements. The phased approach allowed continuity of research while upgrades and relocations were carried out efficiently.
Challenges
Key challenges included integrating new laboratory and bio-containment facilities within an existing operational research site, meeting strict ACDP regulatory standards, and coordinating relocations without disrupting ongoing research activities. The project required careful sequencing, highly controlled environmental systems, and precise MEP coordination.
