Introduction
Harley Haddow were commissioned by the Royal Institution to develop an exemplary net zero masterplan for its historic Grade I listed building, widely recognised as the ‘home of science’ in the UK. Funded by the Greater London Authority, the project was established as a pioneering initiative to demonstrate what can be achieved in decarbonising complex heritage buildings, setting ambitious targets for energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
MEP Solutions
Our team undertook a full site survey and developed a dynamic thermal and energy model to assess existing systems, identify risks, and map a phased route towards net zero. The study highlighted critical plant replacement needs and opportunities to transition to all-electric systems, including the introduction of heat pumps, new plant components and a full Building Management System (BMS) upgrade. Using TM54 energy modelling at the early stages, the project established a robust technical foundation for future refinement through Design for Performance (DfP) modelling.
Collaboration
Harley Haddow worked closely with the Royal Institution and the project steering group to ensure that technical outcomes were clearly communicated and accessible to all decision-makers. To support this, we developed a concise schedule summarising each option’s energy and carbon benefits alongside cost implications, enabling non-technical board members to make informed decisions on the most efficient route to achieve a ‘net zero ready’ building.
Challenges
The listed nature of the building presented significant challenges, particularly around fabric upgrades requiring lengthy approvals. To address this, the team identified simple yet effective measures, such as improving air tightness through sealing chimneys and risers. Working within a finite budget, the masterplan balanced immediate infrastructure priorities with long-term sustainability goals, creating a comprehensive roadmap to guide the Royal Institution’s future decarbonisation journey.
