Introduction

Pearce Lodge is one of the oldest surviving parts of the University of Glasgow, originally founded in 1451 and relocated to its current site in 1870. Built using stonework salvaged from the University’s original High Street location, the building stands as a historic landmark named after Sir William Pearce, a local shipbuilder and benefactor. The project focused on extensive repair, refurbishment and conservation works to restore the Grade A listed property while adapting it for modern university use.

Background

Harley Haddow delivered MEP design services to support the sensitive refurbishment, ensuring the building could function as a modern IT hub while respecting its listed character. The works included the renewal and upgrade of building services to improve efficiency, reliability and comfort for occupants, supporting the relocation of 25 IT services staff into the newly refurbished space.

Collaboration

Close collaboration with the University of Glasgow and the wider design and conservation teams was central to the project’s success. Harley Haddow worked carefully to integrate modern MEP systems within the existing building fabric, maintaining open communication with stakeholders to balance operational needs with heritage requirements throughout the refurbishment process.

Challenges

The primary challenge was upgrading building services within a Grade A listed structure without compromising its architectural integrity. Through detailed coordination and a sensitive design approach, Harley Haddow achieved discreet service integration and effective environmental control. The completed refurbishment preserved the historic character of Pearce Lodge while delivering a functional, efficient workspace that strengthens the University’s digital infrastructure.
