Introduction

The multi-award-winning Parkview development in Dundee involved the full refurbishment and redevelopment of a former school building to create a mix of mews houses and flatted residences. The project also included a new build development of contemporary townhouses alongside complete site-wide infrastructure and utility service renewal.

Harley Haddow provided civil and structural engineering solutions for both the refurbishment and new-build elements. This included structural alterations to convert the former school into high-quality residential units, design of the new townhouse structures, and full redevelopment of site infrastructure. Utilities were fully renewed to support the mixed residential offering and ensure long-term resilience of the development.

Collaboration

Working closely with the client, architect, and contractor, Harley Haddow integrated modern structural solutions within the existing historic fabric while ensuring consistency in quality and character across the new-build and refurbished elements. Early coordination was key to managing the infrastructure renewal without impacting the phased residential delivery.

Challenges

Challenges included adapting the former school’s historic structure for modern residential use, integrating new-build townhouses within the constraints of the existing site layout, and delivering comprehensive utility and infrastructure upgrades across a live development environment. The project required careful sequencing to maintain quality while preserving key architectural features.
