Introduction
The Lyell Support Building is a new support facility constructed for the British Geological Survey on the Heriot-Watt University campus, positioned adjacent to their main Lyell Building. Designed to accommodate a wide range of specialist functions, the facility includes triple-height workshop areas with travelling cranes, dry laboratories, conservation labs, walk-in cold rooms, archive storage, office accommodation and staff break-out areas.

MEP Solutions
Harley Haddow delivered the full MEP design for the building, including a ground source heat pump system to provide efficient, low-carbon heating. The archive spaces were designed to utilise the building’s natural thermal mass to maintain stable temperature and humidity levels. Detailed environmental modelling ensured these areas could operate without the need for additional cooling or humidification systems, significantly reducing energy use and operational costs.
Collaboration
We worked closely with the British Geological Survey, Heriot-Watt University and the wider design team to coordinate building services across a diverse range of specialist environments. Early engagement and consistent communication ensured that laboratory requirements, conservation needs and workshop functions were fully integrated into the architectural and structural design.
Challenges
The project required precise environmental control across a variety of space types, particularly in the archive areas where stability in temperature and humidity was essential. Through detailed modelling and the strategic use of thermal mass, Harley Haddow delivered a low-energy solution without reliance on intensive mechanical systems. Integrating services within triple-height workshop areas and coordinating around heavy equipment, including travelling cranes, also demanded thorough early-stage planning to ensure safe, efficient and resilient operation.
