Introduction

High Sunderland represents the finest of mid-century architectural design. Having being designed by renowned Modernist Architect, Peter Womersley, the HH team were tasked with restoring this unique listed property whilst maintaining the mid-century quirks that Womersley was so well known for. The team were able to reinvigorate the property by adopting unique and contemporary engineering solutions, culminating in a final design that truly captures the buildings original idiosyncratic beauty.

Background

Following a fire in 2018 within the main lounge at High Sunderland, Selkirk, Harley Haddow were appointed to assess the impact on the building’s Mechanical and Electrical services. The commission focused on understanding the extent of damage within the fire-affected area and identifying any wider implications to connected systems throughout the house.

Challenges

The primary challenge was determining the level of secondary damage to M&E systems beyond the immediate fire zone, including smoke, heat and water ingress affecting upstream and downstream equipment. Careful investigation was required to distinguish between systems requiring full replacement and those suitable for repair or recommissioning.

Solutions

Harley Haddow prepared a detailed condition and recommendations report identifying the necessary repair, replacement and reinstatement works. The report provided clear guidance on restoring the M&E services safely and efficiently, addressing both directly damaged installations and affected source equipment elsewhere in the property.
