Encap Capsugel Expansion

Capsugel is a world-leading pharmaceutical company specialising in targeted drug delivery and encapsulation technologies. At its Livingston facility, the focus is on finished product design, development and manufacturing. As part of Capsugel’s planned expansion, Harley Haddow was engaged to support the development and enhancement of specialist laboratory and cleanroom environments.

The project required the expansion of the existing facility while maintaining strict GMP operational standards. Works needed to be carefully phased to minimise disruption to live manufacturing activities, while upgrading existing cleanroom suites to support higher potency processes. Achieving enhanced environmental control, resilience and energy efficiency within tightly regulated GMP Grade C and D environments was a key technical challenge.

Harley Haddow designed the expansion of the facility to include new GMP Grade D cleanrooms, analytical development laboratories and a new dining and breakout space. The existing cleanroom suite was upgraded to operate as a full-loss high-potency unit, improving pressure cascade control and environmental stability. Energy efficiency was enhanced through the installation of LED lighting, run-around coil heat recovery, air-to-air heat pumps and upgraded adiabatic humidification systems, reducing energy consumption while delivering improved accuracy and resilience of cleanroom conditions.
