Introduction

The Egg Shed is a flexible, adaptable, serviced commercial space that can suit a number of potential uses, such as office space and retail, art or craft and is equip with local heritage and a café/restaurant. Part of this new build project includes a space for the local ‘Egg Shed’ Community Group. The impressive views across Loch Gilp provide a unique spectacle for the site. This was kept in mind throughout the design process, allowing the Egg Shed to provide a space that takes full advantage of the panorama.

Background

The project involved the redevelopment of the former Gleaner Oil site in Ardrishaig, taking advantage of its elevated location with views across Loch Gilp. The development aimed to provide flexible commercial and community space, suitable for offices, retail, arts, café use, and local community activities.

Challenges

Challenges included delivering a low carbon, energy-efficient design within a mixed-use development, while creating adaptable spaces capable of accommodating multiple potential occupiers. Balancing sustainability with cost-effectiveness and long-term low maintenance was also key.

Solutions

Harley Haddow provided full MEP design, incorporating an air source heat pump with underfloor heating, heat recovery ventilation, and efficient LED lighting. High-quality fabric insulation and low-energy services created a low carbon, low running cost development. The design supports adaptable, flexible commercial and community spaces, including a dedicated area for the local ‘Egg Shed’ Community Group.
