Introduction

Conversion and extension of the Castlebank Park’s former sawmill building and surrounding gardens to create a Horticultural Centre to serve the community of Lanark.

Background

Following discussions with South Lanarkshire Council, the Lanark Community Development Trust was gifted a dilapidated B-listed stable block originally associated with Castlebank House. After securing funding through a combination of community-led initiatives and grant funding, Harley Haddow was appointed at the earliest stages to review the condition of the historic structure and provide technical input to support cost planning and funding applications.

Challenges

The stable block was in poor condition and required careful assessment to ensure safety while respecting its listed status. Funding constraints and reliance on phased grant awards meant the project needed to be deliverable in stages, with early works generating income to support future development. Ensuring accessibility improvements while limiting structural intervention was also a key consideration.

Solutions

Harley Haddow undertook detailed structural reviews and developed pragmatic, light-touch proposals to stabilise the building and inform funding bids. A two-phase development strategy was established. Phase 1 focused on making the structure safe, delivering new toilet and café facilities, and providing extensive civil engineering works to support horticultural infrastructure. The success of this phase enabled Phase 2, which delivered the refurbishment of the stable block, including new retail, education and storage spaces, with minimal structural intervention to control costs and maximise accessibility improvements.
