Campus Central, University of Stirling

Introduction

Located at the heart of the University of Stirling campus, the redevelopment of the central campus sought to create an environment that encourages social learning and wider community engagement. The project included the extensive refurbishment of the concourse, a central study hub as well as the reimagination of the Quad to provide students and staff with an attractive and functional outside space.

Background

Located at the heart of the University of Stirling campus, this £25m redevelopment transformed the central campus into a vibrant hub for social learning, collaboration and community engagement. The project comprised a new Campus Central building alongside the extensive refurbishment of the existing Atrium concourse and the reimagining of the Quad external space.

Challenges

Delivering a major new build and refurbishment within a live university environment required careful coordination to minimise disruption to students and staff. The scheme also needed to integrate a wide range of functions including study spaces, meeting areas, food outlets and welfare facilities while futureproofing services to support evolving patterns of campus use.

Solutions

Harley Haddow provided full M&E consultancy services from RIBA Stages 1–7, working within a two-stage design and build procurement process with novation to the contractor. The M&E design delivered flexible, efficient and robust building services to support modern learning and social spaces, ensuring the campus centre operates as a welcoming, adaptable and high-performing environment at the heart of the University of Stirling.
