Introduction
This project involved the full refurbishment of a prominent private residence in the heart of Belgravia, London. The client’s brief focused on installing low-energy and low-carbon technologies, improving building systems and controls, and optimising space, particularly by reducing the footprint of a large, inefficient plant room while respecting the building’s classical interior and visual appearance.
MEP Solutions
Harley Haddow provided MEP solutions including discreetly roof-mounted split-type DX units for cooling, with hot water and heating supplied by a relocated gas-fired boiler in the lower ground floor vaults. Ventilation grilles were carefully integrated into bespoke wood panelling and fixed joinery to maintain the classical interior design while providing efficient and low-carbon mechanical services.
Collaboration
Close collaboration with the client and interior designers ensured the mechanical systems were fully integrated into the building’s classical aesthetic. Harley Haddow coordinated the positioning of plant, ductwork, and ventilation grilles to meet both functional and visual requirements, delivering a seamless solution that aligned with the design intent.
Challenges
Key challenges included the limited roof space for plant due to visual constraints, and integrating modern low-energy systems into a sensitive classical interior. The relocation of heating and hot water plant to the lower ground vaults, combined with the use of split-type DX units and discreetly located ventilation, allowed the project to meet energy and carbon targets without compromising the building’s aesthetic or heritage value.
