Introduction
Situated within the grounds of the Category A listed St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh’s West End Conservation Area, the West End Medical Practice project involved relocating and creating a modern, purpose-built facility. The development provides contemporary medical consulting and treatment areas, as well as staff offices and accommodation, while respecting the historic context of the site.
Building Design & Features
The two-storey facility incorporates treatment and public areas at ground floor level, with offices and staff spaces on the first floor. The building was designed using passively engineered principles, including innovative natural ventilation strategies, low U-values and airtight construction to reduce energy demand and provide comfortable indoor conditions.
Sustainability & Energy
The project was delivered to BREEAM Excellent standard and achieves an EPC rating of A. A ground source heat pump provides low-carbon heating, complementing the passive design features to minimise operational energy consumption and reduce the overall environmental impact of the facility.
Our Role
Harley Haddow provided full MEP consultancy, integrating low-energy systems and ensuring compliance with sustainability targets. The team collaborated closely with the client and design team to coordinate building services within the listed setting, achieving high performance while maintaining sensitivity to the cathedral’s historic surroundings.
