Introduction

As part of the Portsmouth Guildhall renaissance project, Harley Haddow is supporting the refurbishment and upgrade of the building’s basement, enhancing its functionality for the next 130 years. The works focus on creating flexible, multipurpose spaces that complement the main auditorium while modernising key facilities.

Background

The basement area is being remodelled to provide a creative hub, including a small performance area, band practice room, workspaces, educational spaces, and upgraded WCs. The design also allows the space to function as a bar during major events in the main auditorium.

Challenges

Working within an existing historic building presents challenges in balancing modern functionality with preservation requirements. The basement must accommodate varied uses while maintaining compliance with building regulations and accessibility standards.

Solutions

Harley Haddow has provided MEP design to support flexible space usage, including efficient heating, lighting, and ventilation systems suitable for both daytime educational use and evening performance events. The team coordinated closely with the design team to integrate modern facilities while respecting the heritage of the Guildhall.
