Introduction

This project delivered a new classroom extension for a Kent grammar school on behalf of Medway Council, designed to increase student capacity following the school’s continued success. The building was developed as a standalone structure, capable of supporting future expansion, and sets a benchmark standard for rolling school development programmes from design through to construction.

MEP Solutions

Harley Haddow provided a full MEP design, incorporating a ground source heat pump, low-energy lighting and photovoltaic panels to reduce carbon emissions and minimise ongoing energy use. The building uses natural ventilation and passive environmental controls, supported by thermal modelling to optimise energy performance while reducing reliance on complex mechanical systems. This approach delivers low operational and lifecycle costs while maintaining simple, intuitive operation for staff and students.

Collaboration

The project was developed in Revit to BIM Level 2, allowing close coordination across the design and construction teams. Harley Haddow worked closely with the school, Medway Council and the wider design team to ensure the extension integrated effectively with the existing campus while meeting the brief for energy efficiency, flexibility and future expansion.

Challenges

Key challenges included creating a high-performing, energy-efficient building that could operate independently from the existing school while remaining adaptable for future expansion. Balancing low-energy operation, natural ventilation strategies and passive environmental design required detailed thermal modelling and careful integration of MEP systems. By combining innovative design with practical construction solutions, the project achieved both sustainability and functionality while meeting the client’s long-term objectives.
