Introduction

Barrhill Primary School serves the small community of Barrhill in South Ayrshire. The redevelopment project refurbished the existing 1870 schoolhouse and included a new sports hall/dining hall extension, as well as a new front entrance and head teacher’s office area. The sports hall was designed to comply with Sport Scotland guidelines, creating a modern, functional learning and recreation environment for staff and pupils.

MEP Solutions

Harley Haddow provided the full MEP design, including a biomass boiler supplying underfloor heating, a sprinkler system, LED lighting throughout, and Cat 6 structured cabling to support modern IT infrastructure. The services were designed to be energy-efficient, low-maintenance, and integrated seamlessly with the new and refurbished spaces.

Collaboration

The project involved close collaboration with the school, the design team, and Sport Scotland to ensure the new sports hall met relevant guidelines while aligning with the overall refurbishment objectives. Harley Haddow coordinated MEP integration to support both the existing and new building elements, ensuring a cohesive and functional facility for staff and pupils.

Challenges

Key challenges included integrating modern MEP services within the historic 1870 schoolhouse while connecting them to the new sports hall extension. The project also required careful planning to ensure that construction and refurbishment works could be delivered efficiently in a compact site while meeting energy efficiency and Sport Scotland requirements.
