Introduction
Situated on Dunoon high street the community hall now provides a welcoming community run arts venue, supported by the local community. Retaining the Baronial heritage and external historical façade, the hall now hosts a flexible and multi-functional event space that serves the whole community.
Background
This project involved the refurbishment and upgrade of core building services to improve reliability, efficiency and long-term performance. The works focused on modernising the building’s energy infrastructure and utilities to support current operational demands and future resilience.
Challenges
The works needed to be carried out on live building services, requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption and maintain continuity of operations. Upgrading major plant and incoming services also required liaison with utility providers to secure new gas and water supplies, while ensuring safe integration with the existing building infrastructure.
Solutions
Harley Haddow designed the replacement of the oil-fired boiler plant with a modern gas-fired system, improving efficiency and reliability. The existing main incoming electrical switchgear was replaced with new equipment to enhance safety and capacity. New gas and mains water supplies were procured and integrated to meet both building and external site requirements, delivering a robust and future-ready services solution.
Project awards

2018 Scottish Heritage Angel Awards – Best Rescue of a Historic Building – Winner
