Introduction
Former private archery club and Category A listed building was redesigned to build student residences on behalf The University of Edinburgh. The project was able to retain the private club whilst designing the new student accommodation as well as new archery butts.
Background
The project comprised two new and refurbished accommodation blocks on the former bowling green south of the Archers Hall. It also included an Archery Butt and social accommodation for the Royal Company of Archers. The development was procured as a design and build contract at RIBA Stage F, with the design team novated to the contractor to complete construction information.
Challenges
The site was located within a conservation area, requiring careful design to reflect the setting while delivering high-quality, energy-efficient accommodation. Integration with the existing University of Edinburgh infrastructure, including the extension of the CHP heating network, required careful coordination. The project also needed to meet programme requirements to allow student occupation for the new academic year.
Solutions
Harley Haddow delivered high architectural standards with quality materials, robust finishes and an envelope designed to minimise heat losses. Heating and lighting systems were locally controllable and energy-efficient. Major site infrastructure works, including the extension of the CHP network, were successfully coordinated, allowing seamless integration with existing facilities and completion on programme.
