Introduction
The full refurbishment of the former listed Victorian lecture theatre in the heart of the Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens. A place of knowledge sharing, the conversion of the space was able to exploit the best elements of the original design whilst incorporating sophisticated ventilation and lighting systems. These techniques were able to create a unique venue that fosters educational enrichment as well as celebrates the unique grounds of the botanics.
Background
This project involved the full refurbishment of a former listed Victorian lecture theatre located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens. The space was transformed into a modern educational venue while retaining the historic character and architectural features of the original building, supporting knowledge sharing and public engagement.
Challenges
Working within a listed building required careful integration of modern building services without compromising the historic fabric. The project needed to provide effective ventilation and lighting suitable for educational and public use, while respecting the architectural integrity and unique setting of the Botanic Gardens.
Solutions
Harley Haddow designed and coordinated sophisticated ventilation and lighting systems that complemented the building’s historic features. The refurbishment preserved the character of the original lecture theatre while creating a flexible, modern venue that supports educational enrichment and celebrates the surrounding botanical environment.
