The Sutton Estate

Residential, Existing Buildings

  • Location
    Chelsea
  • Client
    Clarion Housing Group

Introduction

The Sutton Estate project involved the refurbishment and conversion of four historic residential blocks in Chelsea, creating around 90 modern one, two and three-bedroom apartments while retaining and upgrading the existing 1904 development.

Background

The project focused on bringing the existing accommodation up to modern standards, improving comfort, accessibility and energy performance while working within the constraints of the historic buildings. The refurbishment included upgrades to the apartments and communal areas, alongside the integration of new building services and essential life safety systems.

Challenges

A key challenge was introducing modern services and amenities into the existing building fabric while respecting the character and spatial constraints of the estate. The project also required significant improvements to thermal performance and the careful integration of fire suppression systems and lifts. Low-carbon heating and hot water solutions needed to meet both planning requirements and Clarion Housing Group’s wider sustainability objectives.

Solutions

Harley Haddow supported the integration of efficient, low-carbon heating and hot water systems alongside improvements to the thermal performance of the apartments. Life safety fire suppression systems and new lifts were successfully incorporated into the existing buildings, helping create safer, more accessible and energy-efficient homes suited to modern living.
