Introduction
The Millport Town Hall project focuses on the regeneration of the unoccupied town hall, restoring it as a central gathering space and community beacon for the Great Isle of Cumbrae. The development includes a new purpose-built extension, serviced apartments, refurbished community halls and gardens, and upgraded performance spaces designed in collaboration with specialist consultants.
MEP Solutions
Harley Haddow delivered low carbon building services solutions to support the redevelopment, including the integration of air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. Our MEP team worked to ensure energy efficiency across all areas of the facility, from the town hall and apartments to the new extension, helping create a comfortable and sustainable environment for long-term community use.
Collaboration
Throughout the project, Harley Haddow maintained close collaboration with community-based clients and the wider design team to ensure the development met local needs and aspirations. Our involvement extended beyond design, providing technical guidance and supporting funding bids to help secure financial backing for low carbon technologies and sustainable infrastructure.
Challenges
A key challenge was modernising an unoccupied heritage building while ensuring that new systems complemented its character and met current performance standards. Through careful coordination and a sensitive design approach, Harley Haddow balanced preservation with innovation, delivering a scheme that both honours the town hall’s legacy and supports a sustainable future for the island community.
