Kelvin Hall

Description

Redevelopment and rejuvenation of Glasgow’s famous Kelvin Hall. Giving it back to the public again.

Background
A unique partnership between Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow and the National Library of Scotland sees this much-loved, if neglected venue being transformed into an exciting new centre of cultural excellence. The public will have new access to collections, temporary displays, teaching and research, alongside a state-of-the-art Glasgow Club health and fitness centre.

Challenges
For years Kelvin Hall had leaked energy, and that needed to be reined in to be more sustainable and energy efficient. Many functions required different kinds of energy use. For example, with the data centre, certain valuable archives required consistent cooling.

Solutions
Minimum or no waste was our goal. Regular meetings and reviews with multiple stakeholders enabled us to progress well in these areas. With the data centre’s archive, we were able to capture expelled heat captured at source and use it elsewhere. This project helped us win the RICS project of the year 2017 for its innovatory thinking.
