Apex London Wall Hotel

Description

The boutique Apex Wall Hotel London was developed as a luxury property with 89 spacious bedrooms and suites. A tired 60’s office block brought spectacularly back to life.

Background
One of our long-standing clients, Apex Hotels purchased the existing 1960’s office block at the corner of Copthall Avenue and Great Swan Alley in the City of London intending to convert it to a four-star hotel. This boutique hotel also hosts a stylish restaurant and bar, a private dining room, and gym.

Challenges
The existing building has to work as hard as possible. This involved replacing the existing envelope and extending the building by a further two floors. Loads needed to be cleverly transferred into the existing foundations. Plus, we had to work around constraints imposed by the layouts of the rooms. We also infilled the original carpark, which involved taking out a ramp and building new flooring.

Solutions
“As little as possible. As light as possible,” is an approach central to our ethos and one we adopted here as the basic building structure was in good shape. In the end, the building was extended vertically and given a complete re-clad, delivering increased bedroom numbers and a grander civic presence using Portland stone. The transparency of the ground floor creates a connection between the street and public spaces of the hotel. Sliding glass doors open onto outdoor café seating, while roof terraces to 6th and 7th-floor bedrooms offer striking views across the city.
