The Printworks

Description

Student resident new build on the site of an old print factory. Part of Edinburgh’s Southside Conservation Area.

Background

Occupying the site of a former printworks on Causewayside in Edinburgh the development comprises of 146 studios arranged within three blocks. Plus, high-quality communal facilities, including social rooms, quiet study spaces, laundry, and covered secure cycle storage. It provides Edinburgh’s growing student population with contemporary, premium accommodation.

Challenges
Careful consideration of the building’s historical context was a key factor. As well as the proximity of other buildings and ground conditions. This particularly influenced our piling and foundation strategy. Also important was the environmental impact of the site. This required careful evaluation.

Solutions
The residence has quickly become a popular and successful collaborative community. Students enjoy a range of high-quality communal facilities to encourage socialising. Facilities include a spacious common room, meeting spaces, laundry and bike storage. We worked hard to halve the construction waste sent to landfill and prioritised sustainable methods such as off-site construction. An energy-saving combined heat and power unit, onsite recycling and secure bike storage, all help to keep the environmental footprint light.
