Retrofit in Focus: Celebrating two wins at the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards

Two Harley Haddow projects have been recognised at this year’s AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards, with Millport Town Hall and The Sutton Estate both taking home awards.

Millport Town Hall was named winner in the Positive Addition (up to £5 million) category, while The Sutton Estate received the award for Decarbonisation at Scale.

The recognition is a fitting conclusion to our Retrofit in Focus series, which has explored the engineering behind some of the projects shortlisted at this year’s awards and the different challenges involved in giving existing buildings a sustainable future.

Millport Town Hall

The transformation of Millport Town Hall has brought an important historic building back into use at the heart of its community.

Our Building Performance & Sustainability and MEP teams supported the project with a low-carbon approach incorporating air source heat pumps and photovoltaics, alongside improvements to energy efficiency across the town hall, apartments and extension.

The result demonstrates how considered engineering can help historic buildings meet modern performance requirements while retaining the character and architectural qualities that make them significant.

The Sutton Estate

At The Sutton Estate in Chelsea, the refurbishment of four blocks dating from 1904 centred on improving the performance and longevity of around 90 homes.

Our work supported improvements to thermal performance alongside the integration of low-carbon and efficient heating and hot water systems, life-safety fire suppression and lifts.

Working within the constraints of an existing historic development required engineering solutions that could deliver meaningful improvements in performance while responding sensitively to the original architecture.

Engineering that supports architectural vision

Throughout Retrofit in Focus, one theme has remained consistent: successful retrofit is about much more than upgrading building systems.

It requires an understanding of what makes an existing building work, what makes it worth retaining and how engineering interventions can enhance its performance without compromising the architectural intent.

From heritage buildings and community spaces to large-scale residential estates, early collaboration between engineers, architects and clients can unlock solutions that balance carbon, performance, usability and design.

The recognition of Millport Town Hall and The Sutton Estate at the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards reinforces that approach.

Engineering that supports architectural vision, while helping existing buildings perform better for the people who use them and for the future.
