By working closely with architects and clients from the outset, our engineers can understand the thinking behind the design, identify potential challenges and develop solutions that support the architectural intent. 

Engineering shaped around the project 

A successful solution must respond to more than the technical brief. It must also consider the building’s context, character, programme, budget, performance requirements and future use. 

This is particularly important when working with existing and historic buildings, where the structure and fabric can present unique constraints. Through surveys, research and early investigation, our teams build a detailed understanding of the building before determining the right response. 

Our integrated engineering disciplines then work together to coordinate solutions, reduce conflict and maintain the quality of the overall design. 

From constraint to opportunity 

Complexity does not have to limit architectural ambition. With the right approach, engineering can help unlock opportunities within a design. 

At the V&A Photography Centre in London, Harley Haddow provided civil and structural and MEP engineering for the expansion of the galleries. 

The project required new services, major rooftop plant upgrades and structural interventions within a sensitive historic environment. This included working above protected exhibits, retaining an ornate plaster ceiling and responding to restricted access and loading constraints. 

In Gallery 98, we worked closely with the fit-out architect to develop a bespoke steel and brass structure incorporating book storage, mezzanine levels, stairs and a lift. The result met the gallery’s practical requirements while contributing to the elegance of the completed space.
