Dalousie Castle Hotel & Spa Project Comes to Completion
Since late 2024, our MEP Associate Director, Alan Keith has been hard at work supporting the new owners of the Four-Star Dalhousie Castle Hotel & SPA.
Dalhousie Castle Hotel is a building with impressive historical credentials and operates as a Luxury Hotel and Spa in Bonnyrigg, Scotland. The Hotel was recently purchased by a private owner with aspirations to upgrade the guest experience.
For over 800 years, Dalhousie Castle has witnessed triumphs, tragedies, battles, and the presence of kings (Edward I, Oliver Cromwell) and queens (Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Victoria). Established in the 13th century, the current building took shape around 1450 on the banks of the South Esk River, being converted to a Hotel in 1972 after a brief stint as a “Hogwarts” style boarding School.
Alan says:
“This project was conceived with a challenging program to deliver a full refurbishment of the property whilst maintaining operations and allowing the client to continue revenue generating activities. The project design team have worked hand in hand with the Contractor adopting a flexible implementation strategy. We have already completed MEP and Structural upgrades for Phase 1 of the refurbishment in May 2025, Phase 2A in July 2025 and are now moving into the next phases with a view to completing these late 2025 / early 2026.
It must be said that the design and delivery team have been excellent to collaborate with and have had to contribute collectively to finding solutions on the ground. Proceeding with no formal record information meant that almost every opening up exercise uncovered challenges that couldn’t have been predicted. We don’t expect the future phases to be any different and I am very excited to continue supporting the client in making this magnificent building ready for the future.”
So many to name, but special shout outs to Calum McLeod, Emma Franks of ISA Architecture and Design for their vision and Angus Alston of Severino Group for delivery of such a high quality finish.
