Most of my time within the Practice is taken up sharing the management of our Edinburgh Civil & Structural Group with Mark Lawler. I am quite hands-on with respect to projects and particularly enjoy working through scheme design phase, thereafter taking a less active involvement through the detail design and construction stages. I still get a great deal of satisfaction from delivering a good project. I also get a lot of satisfaction seeing young people develop their career through the Company and strive to offer all of our staff a rewarding and I hope, enjoyable working environment.
I am involved in most aspects of the business including preparation of project submissions, tenders, and cost management of projects and certification of design. I believe that our clients come first and strive towards continued improvements in our service across all disciplines.
My responsibility as Chairman allows me to work more closely with our offices in Glasgow and Guildford and also with our Building Services colleagues. Aside from chairing Partners Meetings, I have responsibility for development of sustainable business strategies which at present include growth, improving our technical excellence and introduction of Investors in People principles within our business.
When I am not engineering I like to go hill walking, cycling nearly anywhere (I seem to collect bikes), the 'odd' game of golf, curling in winter and sailing on the West Coast of Scotland. I also enjoy time with my family (Mary, Chris and Finlay), it helps that they like similar pastimes. I enjoy cooking (not all the time) which helps as I also love eating.
